PSI's .97-liter is designed for the commercial lawn and garden, power generation and industrial markets. It was launched at the 2012 Golf Industry Show as the engine powering John Deere's Gator Utility Vehicles. The all-new .97-liter turbo is a 4-cylinder, electronic fuel-injected gas engine that produces nearly 25% more power and torque, achieving 37 horsepower and 62 foot pounds of torque at 3,000 rpm.

"Both our .97-liter natural and turbo solutions provide OEMs with a cost effective, emission certified alternative to diesel without sacrificing power density or performance," said Jeremy Lessaris, Director of Marketing for PSI.

The commercial lawn and garden market, as well as many industrial segments, are now required to address Tier 4 diesel emission compliance regulations. As a result, OEMs now face both unstable fuel prices and compliance obstacles, including significant cost increases, complex exhaust aftertreatment systems and larger packaging requirements. In response, many companies have sought diesel alternatives, only to find that they must compromise on power, performance and durability.

PSI's .97-liter turbo provides diesel-level power and performance with low emissions and reduced noise, harshness and vibration (NHV) characteristics, eliminating the cost and complexity of Tier 4 emission compliance and the compromises of air-cooled alternatives. Like PSI's entire engine portfolio, the .97-liter engine can be equipped to run on gasoline, natural gas, liquid propane and dual fuels. The lightweight, compact power unit features a closed-loop port-injected EFI and a cross-flow cylinder head that optimizes gasoline fuel combustion for maximum performance while minimizing exhaust emissions. The new liquid-cooled engine also features pistons constructed with a high silicon content, sintered powder-metal exhaust valve seat inserts and a poly V-belt harmonic balancer, all of which add to the product's overall durability and dramatically reduce NHV.

In addition to excellent NHV characteristics, the automotive grade, 4-cylinder .97L engine also offers a cleaner emissions profile. The unit is EPA certified by PSI, which acts as the manufacturer of record (MOR). As the MOR, PSI takes all emission certification responsibility for the engine as well as engineering and applications support.

"Filling the gap between low cost, air cooled engines and costly Tier 4 diesel engines with an emission certified package shows PSI's continued commitment to being a customer focused, cleantech innovator," said Lessaris. "Our .97-liter engine can be customized to meet the compliance and performance needs for a variety of applications."

In addition to the fuel system, the engine can also be customized with a series of options, including: a cooling system, muffler, electronics, air cleaner, power take-offs, mounting kits, hydraulic pumps, adapters, engine control system and PSI's proprietary telematics system, MasterTrak.

Applications that can benefit from PSI's .97-liter engine include: aerial work platforms, booms and scissor lifts, generator sets, turf care and utility vehicles, compact skid-steer loaders, sweeper/scrubbers, pumps and other industrial and commercial markets.

PSI will showcase the new .97-liter turbo engine at booth number 5005 at the GIE Expo at the Kentucky Exposition Center on October 24—26.
